I have spent many a night, for hours and hours (I’m retired), watching all kinds of videos on YouTube about using colored pencils. I finally finished a coloring page.
How I Got to This Point
I first focused on blending tutorials to get started. I recommend a couple of resources:
- Coloring Bliss – Rule of blending thirds – Part 1: https://youtu.be/4pQ0s0Gm0Mg
- Peta Hewitt – Pencil Blending and Choosing Colors: https://youtu.be/RWpcVsYVbzU
- Peta Hewitt – How to Color Leaves: https://youtu.be/knk5G95oOYw
Peta Hewitt does an amazing job providing nuggets of wisdom as she narrates her coloring tutorial videos, such as this one: Jellyfish in Lost Ocean http://la-artistino.com/2016/07/17/colouring-tutorial-jellyfish-in-lost-ocean-parts-1-and-2
I then watched real-time coloring videos to learn how the techniques are applied. I am a visual learner and I learn best by example. This blog post from Peta Hewitt is a real good one where she shows how to do backgrounds using soft pastels: http://la-artistino.com/2015/11/10/lost-ocean-videos-super-smooth-pastel-background-tutorial-and-video-speed-colouring/
